First Class BDes (Hons) Degree - Special Effects for Film and Television
University of Bolton, Greater Manchester

Skills and knowledge
During the 3-year course at the University of Bolton an invaluable insight into the world of SFX was gained. The course content was industry-relevant and included the latest techniques, materials, and innovations. Assignments and projects mimicked production pipelines and criteria, using industry standard materials and software.

Modules included: Design, Fabrication, Realisation, Team Project, Mould Making, Advanced Fabrication, Advanced Realisation, Advanced Project, Technical Research, Industry Project, Major Project – each one giving wider knowledge and growth in skill sets.

Essential skills and experience were gained in production and design including, but not limited to, being able to propose an achievable design concept. In-depth research/analysis, and development of a range of different techniques, learning how to take an idea from a brief and finding the most time-efficient, cost effective, and visually effective way to turn that vision into reality.

These skills were further developed within both my practical and digital abilities, which additionally facilitated the growth of my problem-solving skills and out of the box thinking working out how to apply them to the art of fabrication.

Throughout the course, the importance of teamwork was paramount, not limited to working within project parameters, but also the importance of being a team player outside of them, which is something I will always apply in the future.

Abilities
Creature and Character Design, Practical Sculpting, Digital Sculpting with ZBrush, Photoshop, painting (silicone, acrylic, oil, watercolour, spray paint, weathering), moulding (fibreglass, plaster, silicone), Casting (resin, silicone, intrinsic painting), seeming and patching, hair punching, hair laying, Bladder work, problem solving.

I am a Jack of many trades and happy to get stuck into any project I’m presented with.

Personal Goal
To have the opportunity to apply the skill set gained at University to the SFX industry, with the goal of developing my skills to a higher level.

Waking up in the morning and being excited to get into work.

Soft skills
Alongside education, I have worked in a number of different environments over the years. including hospitality, customer service and as a freelance artist. During this time, I’ve gained invaluable knowledge and skills, such as:
  • Working long hours to complete a job as a team
  • Understanding people and their motivation, how to help them and get the best from them
  • Working to a set task - executing it effectively and on time
  • Managing deadlines and pressure
  • Managing conflict

Adventures
I had the privilege of being able to spend 8 months travelling in 2017/18, this pushed me far out of my comfort zone and gave me a huge amount of independence and personal responsibility at a relatively young age. I had to be very organised, both in my budgeting and time management. I had to learn about each country I visited before arriving, including visa requirements, public transport, the culture, and customs I needed to be respectful of.
During this trip I visited: Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia.
